Dog Gestation Period — What to Expect

The average gestation period for dogs is 63 days from ovulation (approximately 9 weeks). Understanding the gestation period for a dog's pregnancy starts with the mating date — because sperm survive up to 7 days in the reproductive tract, the actual whelping date can range from 58 to 68 days from the first mating date.

Weeks 1–3: Fertilization occurs and embryos travel to the uterine horns. There are no visible signs of pregnancy. Avoid unnecessary medications or vaccines during this window.

Week 4 (days 22–28): Embryos implant in the uterine wall. This is the earliest point for ultrasound confirmation. Some bitches experience “morning sickness” with reduced appetite or mild vomiting.

Signs Your Dog Is Pregnant

Because dogs don't reliably show outward signs until several weeks in, veterinary confirmation — abdominal ultrasound from day 22–25, relaxin blood test from day 28+, or abdominal palpation around day 28 — is the most reliable way to confirm pregnancy early. Visible signs still help track progress once confirmed.

Early signs (weeks 1–3, days 1–21): few to no outward signs. Some bitches show mild lethargy or a slight decrease in appetite (“morning sickness”) around days 21–28. Behavioral changes like increased affection or clinginess are sometimes reported but are not reliable indicators on their own.

Mid-pregnancy (weeks 4–6, days 22–42): nipple enlargement and pinkening (“pinking up”) becomes noticeable, appetite typically increases, and the abdomen begins to visibly round out from around week 5–6 onward.

Pre-whelping signs (final 1–2 weeks): the abdomen enlarges significantly and the dam's mammary glands fill with milk, nesting behavior begins (seeking out a quiet, enclosed space), appetite may drop in the final 24 hours, and rectal temperature drops below 99°F (37.2°C) roughly 12–24 hours before labor begins — the single most reliable predictive sign.
