This dog pregnancy calendar and gestation calculator finds your dog's expected whelping date instantly. Enter the mating date to calculate the dog gestation period, track week-by-week developmental milestones, and prepare for puppies.
Quick Answer
The dog pregnancy length averages 63 days (approximately 9 weeks or 2 months) from conception, with a normal range of 58–68 days depending on the breed and litter size. Enter the mating date above to calculate the exact expected whelping date and key developmental milestones.

A visual week-by-week timeline of the 63-day (9-week) dog pregnancy — print it and pin it up in the whelping area, or save it as a quick reference alongside the calculator above.
Week 1
Fertilization
Mating occurs; sperm fertilizes the eggs in the oviduct.
Week 2
Fertilization & travel
Fertilized eggs travel toward the uterine horns. No visible signs yet.
Week 3
Implantation
Embryos implant in the uterine wall around days 15–18.
Week 4
Embryo development
Organs, claws, and facial features begin forming. Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy from ~day 22–25.
Week 5
Rapid growth
The abdomen begins to enlarge noticeably. Transition toward a higher-calorie diet.
Week 6
Puppies visible on ultrasound
Fetal skeletons and puppy shapes are clearly visible on ultrasound.
Week 7
Puppies fully formed
X-rays can now accurately count puppies. Introduce the whelping box.
Week 8
Nesting behavior
The dam begins nesting. Begin taking rectal temperature twice daily near the end of this week.
Week 9
Birth (whelping)
Temperature drop signals labor is imminent; puppies typically arrive within 12–24 hours.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the date of mating or artificial insemination. Because all dog breeds have essentially the same average gestation length (63 days from ovulation), the breed selection here is provided for reference — actual differences between breeds are minimal. Click Calculate Due Date to get the expected whelping date and full week-by-week milestone breakdown.
For the most accurate results, consider asking your vet to perform progesterone testing at breeding to pinpoint the exact ovulation date.
Dog Gestation Period — What to Expect
The average gestation period for dogs is 63 days from ovulation (approximately 9 weeks). Understanding the gestation period for a dog's pregnancy starts with the mating date — because sperm survive up to 7 days in the reproductive tract, the actual whelping date can range from 58 to 68 days from the first mating date.
Weeks 1–3: Fertilization occurs and embryos travel to the uterine horns. There are no visible signs of pregnancy. Avoid unnecessary medications or vaccines during this window.
Week 4 (days 22–28): Embryos implant in the uterine wall. This is the earliest point for ultrasound confirmation. Some bitches experience “morning sickness” with reduced appetite or mild vomiting.
Weeks 5–6 (days 35–42): Fetal organs, claws, and facial features develop. The abdomen begins to enlarge noticeably. Increase food intake gradually — switch to a high-quality puppy food or food formulated for pregnant/lactating dogs.
Week 7 (days 49–56): The whelping box should be introduced so the dam can get accustomed to it. X-rays can now accurately count the number of puppies. Begin taking rectal temperature twice daily from day 56 onward.
Week 9 (days 57–65): Labor is imminent. When rectal temperature drops below 99°F (37.2°C), whelping typically begins within 12–24 hours. Set up a quiet, warm whelping space and have all supplies ready.
Signs Your Dog Is Pregnant
Because dogs don't reliably show outward signs until several weeks in, veterinary confirmation — abdominal ultrasound from day 22–25, relaxin blood test from day 28+, or abdominal palpation around day 28 — is the most reliable way to confirm pregnancy early. Visible signs still help track progress once confirmed.
Early signs (weeks 1–3, days 1–21): few to no outward signs. Some bitches show mild lethargy or a slight decrease in appetite (“morning sickness”) around days 21–28. Behavioral changes like increased affection or clinginess are sometimes reported but are not reliable indicators on their own.
Mid-pregnancy (weeks 4–6, days 22–42): nipple enlargement and pinkening (“pinking up”) becomes noticeable, appetite typically increases, and the abdomen begins to visibly round out from around week 5–6 onward.
Pre-whelping signs (final 1–2 weeks): the abdomen enlarges significantly and the dam's mammary glands fill with milk, nesting behavior begins (seeking out a quiet, enclosed space), appetite may drop in the final 24 hours, and rectal temperature drops below 99°F (37.2°C) roughly 12–24 hours before labor begins — the single most reliable predictive sign.
Dog Breed Gestation Reference
The gestation period for German Shepherd dogs is 63 days, the same as all other breeds. Similarly, the gestation period for Chihuahua dogs averages 63 days — though small breeds like Chihuahuas have much smaller litters than large breeds.
| Breed | Avg. Gestation (Days) | Typical Litter Size |
|---|---|---|
| Labrador Retriever | 63 days | 6–8 puppies |
| German Shepherd | 63 days | 5–9 puppies |
| French Bulldog | 63 days | 2–4 puppies |
| Golden Retriever | 63 days | 6–8 puppies |
| Chihuahua | 63 days | 1–3 puppies |
How Dogs Compare to Other Animals
At 63 days, dogs gestate for roughly the same length of time as cats and much shorter than most livestock species. The table below compares the dog gestation period to other common pets and farm animals.
| Animal | Avg. Gestation (Days) | Vs. Dog |
|---|---|---|
| Goat | 150 days | 87 days longer |
| Pig | 114 days | 51 days longer |
| Cat | 65 days | 2 days longer |
| Dog | 63 days | — |
| Rabbit | 31 days | 32 days shorter |
| Mice | 20 days | 43 days shorter |
How We Calculate Dog Gestation
The dog gestation calculator uses the formula: Whelping Date = Mating Date + 63 days. The 63-day average is measured from ovulation and validated by the American Kennel Club, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Merck Veterinary Manual. The range of 58–68 days reflects natural variation in mating-to-ovulation timing.
