Donkey Gestation Calculator

Enter your jenny's breeding date to calculate the expected foaling date, pregnancy milestones, and gestation range. Donkeys average 365 days — the longest gestation of any common farm animal.

Note: Donkey gestation is highly variable — 348–395 days is the normal range. Begin monitoring your jenny from day 340 onward and do not be alarmed if she goes significantly past the average date.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the date your jenny was bred using the date picker. Select the breed or type (Standard, Miniature, Mammoth) for a more precise estimate. Click Calculate Due Date to see the expected foaling date, the full 348–395 day range, and a milestone timeline from pregnancy confirmation to foaling.

The very wide normal range in donkey gestation makes this calculator especially important for planning — knowing when to begin your foaling watch can save you weeks of unnecessary late-night monitoring.

Donkey Gestation Period — What to Expect

The donkey gestation period averages 365 days — a full calendar year — with a normal range of 348–395 days. This is considerably longer and more variable than horse gestation (336 days, range 320–362), making precise due date prediction more challenging for donkey owners.

First trimester (days 1–90): Pregnancy can be confirmed by rectal ultrasound as early as day 20–25. Early embryo loss is possible but less common than in horses. Donkeys are relatively hardy during early pregnancy but should be protected from stress, extreme heat, and sudden feed changes.

Second trimester (days 90–240): The jenny's nutritional requirements increase moderately. Donkeys are efficient metabolizers and prone to hyperlipemia (fat mobilization disorder) if they lose weight rapidly during pregnancy. Ensure adequate but not excessive feed — donkeys can become obese easily, which complicates foaling.

Third trimester (days 240–365): Foal growth accelerates significantly. Udder development begins around day 330. The jenny should be on good quality hay or pasture with a donkey-specific mineral supplement. Avoid lush grass in late pregnancy due to metabolic risk.

Donkeys are stoic animals that tend to show labor signs more subtly than horses. A jenny that seems slightly off, is spending more time lying down, or is showing mild restlessness near her due date should be monitored closely. The foal should be standing and nursing within 2 hours of birth.

How We Calculate Donkey Gestation

The donkey gestation calculator uses the formula: Foaling Date = Breeding Date + 365 days. The 365-day average and 348–395 day range are based on data from the American Donkey and Mule Society, Merck Veterinary Manual, and peer-reviewed equine reproduction research. The unusually wide range reflects the high individual variability characteristic of the species.
