How to Use This Calculator

Select the date your cow was bred or artificially inseminated using the date picker above. Optionally, choose your specific breed from the dropdown to get a more accurate estimate — different cattle breeds have slightly different average gestation periods. Then click Calculate Due Date.

This cow gestation period calculator returns the expected calving date, the earliest and latest dates within the normal range, a visual progress bar showing where you are in the pregnancy, and a list of key milestones from embryo detection to final trimester preparations. Results are saved in your browser so they persist between visits.

Cattle & Cow Gestation Period — What to Expect

The average cow gestation period is 283 days, which works out to approximately 9 months and 10 days. Understanding the gestation period for cows is essential for calving season planning — the normal range spans from 279 to 287 days for most breeds, though Brahman and other Bos indicus breeds can carry calves for up to 292 days. The cows gestation period is slightly longer for beef breeds than dairy breeds on average.

Cattle pregnancy is generally divided into three trimesters. The first trimester (days 1–90) covers embryo implantation, fetal organ development, and the critical window where pregnancy losses are most common. The second trimester (days 91–180) is a period of rapid fetal growth — this is when ultrasound or pregnancy testing is typically done. The final trimester (days 181–283) sees the fastest fetal weight gain; calves acquire roughly two-thirds of their birth weight during this period, making maternal nutrition critical.

For first-calf heifers, closer monitoring is essential — they account for the majority of dystocia (difficult birth) cases. Plan to check them every 2–4 hours as they approach their expected date. For cows, normal stage 1 labor (cervical dilation) lasts 2–6 hours, followed by stage 2 (active delivery) of 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Research from Penn State Extension and the University of Minnesota Extension consistently shows that maintaining proper body condition score (BCS 5–6 for beef cows entering the final trimester) and ensuring adequate selenium and vitamin E supplementation significantly reduces calving complications and improves calf vigor.

How We Calculate Cattle Gestation

Our cattle gestation calculator uses the formula: Due Date = Breeding Date + Average Gestation Days. The average of 283 days is derived from large-scale breed registry data and validated by USDA and university extension research. For breed-specific calculations, we use published averages from the American Angus Association, Holstein Association USA, and similar registries.
