That said, three things consistently shift an individual animal away from the species average: breed (Bos indicus cattle like Brahman gestate 5–10 days longer than Bos taurus breeds like Holstein; draft horses run longer than miniature horses), litter size (animals carrying multiples, from cattle twins to rabbit litters, often deliver a few days earlier than single-offspring pregnancies), and individual variation (age, body condition, and general health all play a role, particularly in livestock).

Animals With the Longest Gestation Periods
Among the species on this chart, elephants carry their calves by far the longest — an average of 645 days (about 21.2 months, or nearly two years). That's more than three times the length of a human pregnancy, and it reflects both the elephant's enormous body size and the extraordinary brain development a calf needs before birth — elephant calves are born able to stand, walk, and follow the herd within hours, but their large, complex brains take far longer to develop in utero than almost any other land mammal's.
Giraffes come next at 457 days (about 15 months) — long enough that a calf is born already roughly 6 feet tall and standing within about an hour, a critical adaptation since newborn giraffes are vulnerable to predators on the open savanna. Among domestic and working animals, donkeys have the longest gestation at 365 days — a full calendar year — followed closely by llamas (350 days) and alpacas (340 days), both South American camelids whose crias are born well-developed and standing within an hour, and horses at 336 days.

At the opposite extreme, hamsters have the shortest gestation of any animal on this chart — just 16 days on average for Syrian hamsters, with some individuals delivering in as few as 15. Mice are close behind at 20 days.
