How to Use This Calculator
Enter the date your ewe was bred or the date the ram was introduced to the flock. If you run a ram with the flock for several weeks, use the midpoint of the breeding period for your estimate, or enter individual breeding dates if you have records. Select the breed for a more accurate estimate and click Calculate Due Date.
The calculator stores your result in the browser, making it easy to check expected lambing dates throughout the season.
Sheep Gestation Period — What to Expect
The average sheep gestation period is 147 days (approximately 5 months), with a normal range of 142–152 days. The gestation period for sheep varies slightly by breed and litter size — fine wool breeds tend toward the longer end while hair sheep are at the shorter end. Sheep are seasonal breeders in most climates, so understanding the gestational period for sheep helps farmers plan lambing to align with grass growth and labor availability.
First two months (days 1–60): Embryo implantation occurs around day 14–16. This is the most vulnerable period for embryo loss. Heat stress, disease exposure (especially in the first 30 days), and severe nutritional deficiency are the primary causes of early pregnancy loss. Pregnancy can be confirmed by ultrasound at day 25–30.
Middle period (days 60–120): Fetal growth is steady but moderate. The gestation period in sheep during this phase is relatively uneventful. Body condition score (BCS) should be maintained at 3–3.5. This is a good time to check for pregnancy and count fetuses via ultrasound to identify ewes carrying multiples who will need extra nutrition.
Final trimester (days 120–147): Over 70% of fetal growth occurs in the last 6 weeks. Ewes carrying twins or triplets have dramatically higher nutritional needs during this period. Inadequate energy intake during the final trimester is the primary cause of pregnancy toxemia (ketosis). Gradually increase concentrate feeding and move ewes to the lambing area 1–2 weeks before the expected date.
Research from Penn State Extension recommends selenium/vitamin E supplementation 4–6 weeks before lambing in selenium-deficient regions, and CDT (clostridium/tetanus) booster vaccination 2–4 weeks before lambing to maximize colostrum antibody levels for newborn lambs.

How We Calculate Sheep Gestation
The sheep gestation calculator uses the formula: Lambing Date = Breeding Date + 147 days. The 147-day average is based on data from USDA, Penn State Extension, and the Merck Veterinary Manual. Breed-specific estimates use published averages from breed association research.
