British Breeds — The Moderate Middle

The British breeds — Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn — are the backbone of the North American beef industry and cluster in the 281–285 day range. These breeds were selected for moderate frame size, good maternal traits, and calving ease, which is reflected in their moderate gestation lengths and typically lower rates of dystocia compared to larger continental breeds.

Angus in particular has been widely promoted for calving ease EPDs, and the breed has extensive data supporting selection for reduced birth weight and dystocia. For ranchers who calve on range with minimal supervision, British breeds with strong calving ease EPDs are a common default choice.

Continental European Breeds — Longer Gestation, Heavier Calves

Simmental, Charolais, and Limousin — collectively called "continental European breeds" or "Continentals" — average 287–290 days. These breeds were developed for large body size and high growth rates, which is reflected in heavier average birth weights. The longer gestation aligns with this larger fetal size.

The tradeoff with Continental breeds is that calving difficulty (dystocia) rates are higher on average, particularly when Continental bulls are used on British or smaller-framed cows. Matching sire birth weight EPDs to cow size is critical when using these breeds.

Bos Indicus Breeds — The Longest Gestations

Brahman and other Bos indicus breeds consistently have the longest gestations of any major cattle breed — averaging 290–292 days. This is a consistent genetic trait across Bos indicus breeds and appears related to differences in placental hormone regulation and fetal growth patterns.

Crossbred cattle with Bos indicus genetics (Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, Beefmaster) have intermediate gestations, typically 285–288 days, proportional to their Bos indicus percentage. If you're using a Brahman bull on Angus cows, expect the resulting calves to be carried several days longer than a pure Angus × Angus breeding.
