How to Use This Calculator

Enter the date your hamster was bred using the date picker. Select the species from the dropdown — Syrian hamsters have a notably shorter gestation than dwarf species like Roborovski or Chinese hamsters. Click Calculate Due Date to see the expected due date, earliest and latest dates within the normal range, and a full milestone timeline.

Because hamster gestation is so short, mark the breeding date immediately and separate the male from the female well before the due date — pregnant or newly-delivered females are especially prone to stress. Results are saved in your browser between visits.

How Long Is a Hamster Pregnant?

The gestation period for a hamster averages 16 days for Syrian hamsters — one of the shortest gestation periods of any mammal. Dwarf species vary more: Campbell's Dwarf Russian and Winter White hamsters average 18–21 days, Chinese hamsters average around 21 days, and Roborovski dwarfs — the smallest common pet hamster — can take up to 23 days.

Days 1–6: Embryo implantation occurs within the first few days. Pups are altricial — born blind, hairless, and completely dependent — so almost all of their development happens after birth rather than in the womb, which is part of why gestation can be so short.

Days 6–12: Rapid fetal development occurs. The mother's abdomen begins to visibly round out, and she may start hoarding extra food in her cheek pouches — a normal instinctive preparation for the litter.

Days 12–16: Nesting behavior intensifies as the mother builds an enclosed nest from bedding material. Avoid handling her from this point forward — hamsters are notorious for abandoning or cannibalizing a litter if they feel threatened shortly before or after birth. Labor itself is usually brief and occurs without assistance.

How We Calculate Hamster Gestation

The hamster gestation calculator uses the formula: Due Date = Breeding Date + 16 days. The 16-day average for Syrian hamsters is derived from published small-animal veterinary research and validated by the Merck Veterinary Manual. Species-specific estimates for dwarf hamsters use published averages from small mammal reproduction literature.
