Planning for Spring Calving

- Limit bulls to the herd for exactly 60 days — pull them on the last day of the intended breeding period
- Flush cows to a BCS 5–6 before the breeding season opens (30–60 day pre-breed nutrition improvement)
- Use estrus synchronization protocols to concentrate breeding and calving further if your operation benefits from it
- Pregnancy test all cows 60–90 days after the bull is removed — identify open cows early and cull or rebreed
Staggering Calving for Labor Management
Very large operations sometimes run two or more calving groups bred at different times to stagger labor requirements. For example, one group bred in April (calving in February) and a second group bred in May (calving in March) splits the peak monitoring period across two months instead of one.
