A 283-day pregnancy is a long commitment — both biologically and managerially. Understanding what's happening in each phase helps you match nutrition, health management, and monitoring intensity to where the cow actually is in her pregnancy. Getting this right pays off in calf vigor, calving ease, and cow reproductive performance in the following breeding season.

First Trimester — Days 1 Through 90
The first trimester is the most precarious phase, though it's often the one that receives the least attention because nothing visible is happening.
Fertilization occurs within 12–24 hours of mating. By day 7–8, the embryo is a blastocyst entering the uterus. The critical step — implantation — occurs between days 18 and 22. During implantation, the embryo establishes contact with the uterine wall and begins forming placentomes (the specialized attachments that connect the placenta to the uterus in cattle). There are approximately 70–120 placentomes in a bovine pregnancy.
From days 25–90, all of the fetus's major organ systems — heart, brain, limbs, digestive system — develop. At day 45, the fetus is roughly the size of a small mouse. By day 90, it weighs approximately 0.5 lbs and all structures are anatomically recognizable.
Management priority: Early embryo mortality is the primary concern in this phase. Stress, heat, nutritional deficiency, and disease can all trigger resorption. Key actions: avoid weaning stress within 30 days of breeding, maintain body condition (BCS 5–6 for beef cows), manage heat stress during the first 4 weeks, and ensure BVDV vaccination is current before breeding.
Second Trimester — Days 91 Through 180
The second trimester is the most stable phase of cattle pregnancy. The pregnancy is established, the major organs are formed, and the fetus is growing steadily. This is the typical window for pregnancy testing (days 60–90 post-breeding is the common industry target).
The fetus reaches approximately 5–7 lbs by day 180. Skeletal development is active; the fetal skeleton begins calcifying during this trimester, which is why X-rays in cattle are done in the final trimester rather than the second (unlike in small animals where earlier calcification allows earlier counting). The fetal sex is determined at conception but can be determined by ultrasound examination from approximately day 55–75.
Management priority: This is the most nutritionally flexible phase. Cows can maintain their weight on normal pasture or feeding programs. However, cows that enter the second trimester below BCS 5 should be managed up to target body condition before the third trimester, as correcting body condition in late gestation is more difficult and interferes with fetal development.
Third Trimester — Days 181 Through 283
The third trimester is where the management stakes are highest. Approximately two-thirds of the calf's total birth weight is gained in the final 90 days of gestation. A calf that was 7 lbs at day 180 may weigh 75–100 lbs at birth — that entire weight gain happens in the third trimester. The nutritional demand on the cow is enormous, particularly in the last 4–6 weeks.
This is also when fetal programming occurs — the nutritional environment the fetus experiences in the third trimester affects its metabolic function, immune development, and growth potential throughout its life. Research consistently shows that cows in poor body condition (BCS below 4) in late gestation produce calves with compromised immune function, reduced birth weight, and lower weaning weights.
Management priorities:
- Maintain BCS 5–6 for beef cows, BCS 3.5–4 for dairy cows entering calving
- Ensure adequate selenium and vitamin E — selenium deficiency is a leading cause of white muscle disease in calves. Supplement 4–6 weeks before calving in deficient areas.
- Administer pre-calving vaccinations (scours vaccines, clostridial boosters) 4–6 weeks before expected calving to maximize colostrum antibody levels
- Move first-calf heifers to calving pastures 2–3 weeks before expected calving for closer monitoring
- Begin intensive calving checks (every 2–4 hours for heifers) as the expected calving window approaches
