The Most Popular Pet Bird in the World
The budgerigar is widely regarded as the most popular pet bird species globally, prized for its small size, low cost, cheerful chattering, and surprising capacity to mimic words and phrases, making it a common first bird for new owners worldwide.
English vs. American Budgies
English budgies (also called show or exhibition budgies) are noticeably larger and fluffier, bred specifically for exhibition standards, while American budgies (the more common pet-shop variety) are smaller, sleeker, and closer in size to the wild ancestral budgerigar. Both share the same 18-day average incubation period.
Egg-Laying Order & Hatching Sequence
A female budgie typically lays one egg every other day until her clutch of 4 to 8 eggs is complete. Because incubation effectively begins with each individual egg once laid, chicks hatch in the same order they were laid — meaning the oldest chick can be significantly larger and more developed than the youngest by the time the last egg hatches, creating real feeding competition within the nest that breeders monitor closely.
Banding, Weaning & Mutations
Breeders place a small numbered leg band on budgie chicks, typically within the first week or two of hatching while their legs are still small enough to fit through the band, to permanently identify each bird's hatch date, breeder, and lineage for record-keeping and show purposes. Chicks are typically fully weaned by around 6 weeks of age.
Budgies have over 30 recognized color mutations, ranging from the wild-type green and yellow to blues, violets, greys, albinos, and elaborate combinations — one of the most extensively documented color mutation catalogs of any commonly bred pet bird species, a result of over a century of selective breeding. Their talking ability, while more limited than larger parrots, can develop with consistent early handling and repetition, and some individual budgies build surprisingly large vocabularies.
