Leopard Gecko Egg Incubation Calculator

This leopard gecko egg incubation calculator finds the expected hatch date based on your incubation temperature. Because leopard geckos exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination, your temperature choice affects both hatch timing and hatchling sex.

Quick Answer

Leopard gecko eggs hatch in 35 to 89 days depending entirely on incubation temperature. Enter your lay date above and select a temperature band to calculate the expected hatch date.

Temperature Sex Determination (TSD) Explained

Leopard geckos don't have sex chromosomes — hatchling sex is determined entirely by incubation temperature during a critical window of embryonic development, a phenomenon called temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). This is why breeders deliberately choose an incubation temperature not just for timing, but to influence the sex ratio of the clutch.

TemperatureTypical Sex RatioApprox. Incubation
80°F (26.7°C)Mixed sex~58 days
84°F (28.9°C)Roughly 50/50~48 days
87.5°F (30.8°C)Mostly female (“hot female” range)~44 days
90°F (32.2°C)Mostly male~40 days

Incubation Substrate Guide

Vermiculite or perlite mixed with water at roughly a 1:1 ratio by weight is the standard incubation substrate — it retains moisture well without waterlogging. Bury eggs about halfway, leaving the top exposed, and never rotate an egg from its original orientation once placed — the embryo attaches to the upper interior of the shell early on, and flipping the egg can be fatal.

Humidity, Candling & Hatchling Care

  • Humidity: 80–90%, maintained via the moist substrate itself.
  • Clutch size: just 2 eggs per clutch, but a healthy female can lay up to 8 clutches per breeding season.
  • Candling (day 10–14): a viable egg appears pink and vascularized; an infertile or “dud” egg stays yellow and translucent.

Set up a hatchling enclosure with a warm side around 88–90°F and a cool side around 75°F, plus a moist hide to support shedding. Hatchlings typically take their first meal — small crickets or dubia roaches dusted with calcium — within a few days of their first shed.

How We Calculate Leopard Gecko Incubation

The leopard gecko egg incubation calculator uses the formula: Hatch Date = Lay Date + Days for Selected Temperature. Temperature-specific estimates are derived from published herpetological TSD research.
