How Long Do Ball Python Eggs Take to Hatch?

Ball python eggs take 57 days to hatch on average. A clutch typically runs 4 to 10 eggs, averaging 6. Days 1–14: the embryo begins forming; the eggs, laid adherent to each other in a single mass, are set in the incubator and left undisturbed. Days 14–50: steady development continues, with candling possible to confirm viability. Days 50–57: eggs begin to visibly dimple or slightly collapse as the hatchlings prepare to pip.

Morph Genetics Overview

Ball pythons are bred for an enormous range of color and pattern morphs — Pastel, Albino, Piebald, Banana, Clown, and hundreds of combinations produced by combining single-gene traits. None of these morphs affect incubation length, temperature requirements, or clutch size; genetics determines appearance only, while incubation timing is driven entirely by temperature consistency.

Candling Schedule & Hatching Signs

• Day 14 candling: a viable egg shows a visible network of blood vessels; an infertile or “slug” egg stays translucent with no development.
• Day 35 candling: confirms continued growth — most breeders limit candling to twice total to minimize disturbance.
• Days 50–55: eggs begin to dimple or slightly cave in — a normal, expected sign that hatching is near, not a problem.
• Pip to full hatch: once the first pip appears, hatchlings typically fully emerge within 24–48 hours, sometimes lingering in the shell longer to finish absorbing the yolk sac.

Do Not Assist Hatchlings

A hatchling that has pipped but not fully emerged is usually still absorbing its yolk sac through the umbilical stalk. Pulling a hatchling from the egg too early can cause fatal injury or premature separation. Only intervene if a hatchling appears visibly stuck and struggling for well over 48 hours with no progress — and even then, proceed carefully or seek experienced guidance.

Hatchling First Feeding

Most ball python hatchlings won't accept food until after their first shed, typically 7 to 10 days after hatching. Refusing food before this point is completely normal — the hatchling is still living off absorbed yolk reserves.
