Unlike most fish, guppies are livebearers (ovoviviparous) — the female retains fertilized eggs internally, nourishes the developing embryos, and gives birth to fully-formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs that hatch externally. This is the same reproductive strategy used by mollies, platies, and swordtails, and it means there's no external incubation stage to manage — just a gestation countdown to live birth.
How to Tell If a Guppy Is Pregnant
The most reliable sign is the gravid spot, a dark triangular patch near the anal fin that darkens and expands as the pregnancy progresses toward birth. As the fry develop, the female's belly loses its normal rounded curve and takes on a distinct squared-off, boxy shape. In the final days, expect hiding behavior — the female seeks cover among plants or decor as she prepares to give birth, and appetite often drops noticeably.

Breeding Boxes & Fry Survival Tips
Many breeders move a visibly gravid female into a floating breeding box during her final week, isolating her from tankmates and letting newborns fall through slots away from the mother — since guppies, including the mother herself, will eat newborn fry on sight.
Whether or not you use a breeding box, heavy planting with fine-leaved plants like java moss gives fry cover to hide in immediately after birth. Remove the mother from the fry tank as soon as birth is complete — this single step does more for fry survival than almost anything else.
Feeding Fry & the First 30 Days
Newborn fry can eat very finely crushed flake food, commercial fry powder, baby brine shrimp (once large enough to swallow), and microworms. Feed small amounts several times daily rather than one large feeding, and siphon out uneaten food to protect water quality in the small fry tank.
Fry grow quickly on a good diet — by 3–4 weeks, males begin developing a gonopodium (modified anal fin) and showing color, making sexing fry possible. Separate males from females around this stage to prevent accidental early breeding within the same batch, since guppies can reach sexual maturity in as little as 8 weeks.

Troubleshooting Guppy Pregnancy
- Female not giving birth on the expected date: Guppies can hold fry slightly past the average if stressed, so allow a few extra days within the 21–30 day range before assuming a problem.
- Stillborn or deformed fry: Usually linked to poor water quality, inbreeding within a small colony, or a stressed pregnancy — test ammonia and nitrite immediately.
