Brumation is a reptile's version of hibernation — a period of reduced activity and metabolism triggered by shorter days and cooler temperatures, typically lasting 6–12 weeks. Many breeders brumate adult bearded dragons deliberately before the breeding season, since a brumation cycle is believed to help trigger and synchronize reproductive readiness in both males and females, closely mimicking the seasonal cues wild dragons experience.

A healthy female bearded dragon can lay up to 5 clutches in a single breeding season, with each clutch containing 15 to 30 eggs (averaging around 20). This repeated egg-laying is physically demanding, which is why calcium supplementation and adequate recovery time between clutches are essential for the female's health.

Signs of egg binding (dystocia) include a visibly gravid female that stops digging or nesting behavior for an extended period, straining without producing eggs, lethargy, swollen or discolored hind legs, and loss of appetite. Egg binding is a veterinary emergency — a female showing these signs for more than 24–48 hours needs an experienced reptile vet promptly.

House hatchlings individually or in small same-sized groups to prevent competitive stress and injury, with a basking spot around 95–100°F and a cool side around 80°F. Offer appropriately sized crickets or dubia roaches dusted with calcium multiple times daily, along with finely chopped leafy greens, starting within a day or two of hatching.

In the final days, eggs typically develop a visible dimple or slight collapse as the hatchling absorbs the remaining yolk and prepares to pip. Once pipped, hatchlings may take 24–48 hours to fully emerge, sometimes resting partially in the shell in between.

At 65 days, bearded dragons incubate faster than leopard geckos at cooler temperatures (up to 89 days) but slower than leopard geckos incubated warm (as fast as 35 days), and much faster than iguanas (105 days) or monitor lizards (165 days).
