Bettas Are Egg Layers, Not Live Bearers

Unlike guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails, betta fish are egg layers (oviparous). The female releases eggs externally during a spawning embrace, the male fertilizes them, and the eggs then develop outside the body in a bubble nest rather than inside the mother. This is a fundamentally different reproductive strategy from livebearer fish, and it's why betta breeding centers around nest-building and paternal care rather than gestation and live birth.

Bubble Nest Building & Spawning

Before spawning, the male builds a bubble nest — a cluster of mucus-coated air bubbles at the water's surface, often anchored against a floating plant or tank corner. During the spawning embrace, the male wraps his body around the female, she releases eggs, and he fertilizes them as they fall. He then catches the sinking eggs in his mouth and places them one by one into the nest, repeating the embrace-and-collect cycle until spawning is complete — sometimes producing anywhere from 10 to 500 eggs in a single spawn.

Why the Male Cares for the Eggs

Paternal-only care is rare among fish, but it's the defining reproductive trait of bettas. Once spawning ends, the male guards, fans, and maintains the bubble nest alone, retrieving any eggs that fall and repairing damaged bubbles until the fry hatch and become free-swimming. Remove the female immediately after spawning — the male typically turns aggressive toward her once his focus shifts fully to nest defense, and she can be seriously injured or killed if left in the tank.

Temperature Effect on Hatch Time

Stages of Fry Development

• 0–36 hours: Eggs hatch, releasing tiny wriggling larvae with visible yolk sacs.
• Days 2–3: Fry hang from the bubble nest, absorbing the remaining yolk sac and not yet feeding.
• Days 3–5: Fry become free-swimming, spreading out from the nest and beginning to hunt for food.
• At free-swimming: Remove the male — once fry disperse, his protective instincts fade and he may begin eating them.

First Foods & Feeding Schedule (Days 1–30)

Free-swimming fry are extremely small and need infusoria or vinegar eels for the first several days — commercial flake food is far too large initially. Around day 5–7, transition to microworms, then to newly hatched baby brine shrimp around day 10–14 as mouth size increases. Feed several small amounts throughout the day rather than one large feeding. By day 30, most fry can handle finely crushed flake and are large enough to begin sexing.

Common Spawning Failures

• Eggs fungusing white: Infertile or dead eggs develop a fuzzy white fungal coating and should be removed before it spreads to healthy eggs.
• Male eating the eggs: Can happen with inexperienced or overly stressed males — sometimes resolved by reducing tank disturbance and dimming lights.
• Female eating the eggs: Another reason to remove her promptly after spawning, since an unremoved female may raid the nest.
• No nest built at all: Often indicates the male isn't in breeding condition, or water conditions (poor quality, no cover) aren't encouraging nest-building behavior.

Does Betta Type Affect Spawning?

The core spawning behavior — nest building, embrace, egg fertilization, male care — is consistent across betta types like plakat, halfmoon, and crowntail. However, males with extremely long, heavy fins can sometimes struggle physically during the vigorous spawning embrace, and very aggressive strains may be harder to pair safely, so many breeders favor shorter-finned plakat males for easier, lower-risk spawns.
