Duck Egg Incubation Calculator

This duck egg incubation calculator finds the expected hatch date instantly. Enter the date you set the eggs to calculate the incubation period for your breed — including the notably longer Muscovy timeline — and view the candling and lockdown schedule.

Quick Answer

Duck egg incubation takes 28 days on average for most breeds — Muscovy ducks take about 35 days. Enter your set date above and select the breed to calculate the exact expected hatch date, humidity guide, and candling schedule.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the date you set the eggs in the incubator using the date picker. Select the breed from the dropdown — this matters more for ducks than for most poultry, since Muscovy ducks take a full week longer than every other common breed. Click Calculate Due Date to see the expected hatch date, the earliest and latest dates in the normal range, and a full milestone timeline.

If you're incubating a mixed clutch of Muscovy and standard duck eggs together, track them separately — setting them on the same date but expecting them to hatch a week apart is completely normal and not a sign anything is wrong.

How Long Do Duck Eggs Take to Hatch?

Most domestic duck breeds — Pekin, Khaki Campbell, Rouen, and Call Duck — take 28 days to hatch. Muscovy ducks are the major exception at approximately 35 days, since Muscovy are a genetically distinct species from the mallard-derived breeds that make up most other domestic ducks.

Days 1–7: The embryo begins forming. Duck eggshells are often thicker and more opaque than chicken eggshells, so the day-7 candling check can be harder to read clearly — use a bright, focused candling light.

Days 7–14: Growth continues steadily and the embryo takes shape. Many duck keepers begin a daily brief cooling period around this stage — misting the eggs and letting them cool for a few minutes, mimicking a hen duck briefly leaving the nest.

Days 14–28 (or 14–35 for Muscovy): The duckling grows to fill the egg. Lockdown begins around day 25 for standard breeds (day 32 for Muscovy) — turning stops and humidity rises significantly to prepare for hatching.

Temperature Guide

  • Forced-air incubators: 99.5°F (37.5°C) — same as chicken eggs.
  • Still-air incubators: 101.5°F (38.6°C), measured at the top of the eggs.
  • Temperature requirements don't differ meaningfully from chicken eggs — it's humidity where duck incubation really diverges.

Humidity Requirements — Higher Than Chickens

Duck eggs need meaningfully higher humidity than chicken eggs throughout incubation, reflecting the naturally damp, marshy nests wild and domestic ducks build:

  • Days 1–25 (days 1–32 for Muscovy): 55–60% relative humidity — compared to just 45–55% for chicken eggs.
  • Lockdown (final 3 days): 75% relative humidity.

Many duck keepers also mist the eggs lightly with lukewarm water once daily starting around day 7, and some briefly cool the eggs for 10–15 minutes during this misting — mimicking a hen duck leaving the nest. This isn't strictly required with a well-calibrated humidity setup, but many experienced duck breeders report better hatch rates with it.

Candling Schedule

DayWhat to Look For
Day 7First check for a visible blood vessel network — duck shells are thicker, so use a bright light
Day 14Confirm continued growth; air cell should be visibly larger than at day 7
Day 25 (Day 32 for Muscovy)Final check before lockdown

How Duck Eggs Compare to Chicken and Goose Eggs

At 28 days, standard duck eggs take a week longer to hatch than chicken eggs but finish sooner than goose eggs.

How We Calculate Duck Egg Incubation

The duck egg incubation calculator uses the formula: Hatch Date = Set Date + Average Incubation Days. The 28-day average for standard breeds and the 35-day Muscovy average are derived from published poultry science research and validated by university extension waterfowl programs.
