How Long Do Goose Eggs Take to Hatch?

Goose eggs take 30 days to hatch on average — the longest incubation of any common backyard poultry species. Days 1–9: the embryo begins forming; a visible blood vessel network appears by the first candling. Days 9–15: growth continues steadily, and daily misting from around day 7 helps manage the thick shell's moisture loss. Days 15–30: the gosling grows to fill the egg; lockdown begins around day 27, with humidity raised to 75% to prepare for hatching.

Signs of Healthy Incubation Progress

• Day 9 candling: a visible network of blood vessels and a dark, moving embryo confirms fertility and healthy development.
• Day 15 candling: the egg should appear mostly dark with a clearly defined, enlarging air cell.
• Weight loss tracking: a goose egg should lose roughly 13–15% of its starting weight by lockdown — weigh eggs periodically to confirm humidity is in the right range.
• Pipping around day 28–29: the gosling breaks into the air cell, followed by external pipping and zipping through the shell over the following 24–48 hours.
