A major advantage of crested geckos is that their eggs can be incubated successfully at stable room temperature (68–75°F / 20–24°C), humidity 80%, without a dedicated incubator — unlike most other reptile eggs that need active heating. This makes them one of the more approachable species for first-time egg-layer breeders.

Egg Development Stages
In the first 1–2 weeks, fertile eggs firm up and begin to slightly enlarge. By the midpoint, careful candling can reveal veining and embryo movement. In the final 1–2 weeks, eggs may show a slight dimple as the hatchling prepares to pip. A female lays 2 eggs per clutch and can produce up to 8 clutches per season, roughly every 3–4 weeks under good conditions.
Fired-Up vs. Fired-Down Hatchlings & First Feeding
Crested geckos can shift their skin coloration and pattern contrast in response to temperature, stress, or activity level. “Fired up” means displaying bold, high-contrast colors and pattern; “fired down” means a duller, muted appearance — both are normal and temporary, not signs of illness. Most hatchlings shed within a day or two of hatching and eat that shed skin, then don't need feeding again for several more days. Offer a commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) powder mixed with water once active feeding begins.
