The ostrich is the fastest running bird on Earth, capable of reaching speeds up to 45 mph in short bursts and sustaining speeds around 30 mph over longer distances — far faster than any human sprinter, despite being completely flightless.

Multiple females lay their eggs in a single shared ground nest, but the dominant female's eggs occupy the protected center of the clutch while subordinate females' eggs are pushed toward the outer edges. Commercial ostrich farming produces lean red meat, valuable leather prized for its distinctive quill-bump texture, decorative feathers, and large eggshells sometimes used for art and craft purposes. Ostrich farming is established in South Africa (historically the largest producer), the United States, Australia, and several other countries.
