Sheep Breeding Calculator

This sheep breeding calculator works backward from your target lambing date to find your ideal tupping (breeding) date and breeding window.

Quick Answer

To hit a target lambing date, subtract the 147-day average gestation period to find your target tupping date. Enter your desired lambing date above for exact results.

Sheep Breeding Season

Most sheep breeds are seasonal, short-day breeders — the natural breeding season in the Northern Hemisphere runs approximately August through January, triggered by shortening autumn daylight, resulting in lambing from January through June. Some breeds — Dorset, Polypay, and Merino among them — have extended or near year-round breeding seasons, and are often chosen specifically for accelerated lambing programs producing more than one lamb crop annually.

Ram-to-Ewe Ratios

A mature, fertile ram can typically breed 35 to 50 ewes during a controlled breeding season on reasonable terrain. Young rams under 18 months should be limited to 15–25 ewes. Rough or hilly terrain generally calls for a lower ratio than open, flat pasture.

Synchronized Breeding Protocols

Synchronized breeding uses hormone treatments — commonly progesterone sponges or CIDRs combined with PMSG — to bring a group of ewes into heat within a tight window. This concentrates lambing into a shorter, more manageable period and enables more precise use of artificial insemination across the flock.

Flushing Ewes Before Tupping

Flushing — increasing a ewe's nutritional plane for 2–3 weeks before and during the breeding season — increases ovulation rate and, in turn, twinning rates. It's a well-established, low-cost way to boost overall lamb crop size, typically achieved by moving ewes to higher-quality pasture or adding supplemental feed just before the rams go in.
