How Long Are Wolves Pregnant?
Wolves are pregnant for 62 to 63 days, essentially indistinguishable from domestic dog gestation, since dogs are a domesticated subspecies of the gray wolf. Days 1–16: fertilized eggs travel to and implant in the uterus. Days 16–45: rapid fetal growth and skeletal development occur. Days 45–63: the pack intensifies den preparation, with pregnant females digging or enlarging a den site ahead of whelping.
Litter Size & Pack Dynamics During Pregnancy
Litters typically range from 4 to 6 pups. In most packs, only the dominant female breeds each year, though subordinate females occasionally do in resource-rich territories.
The whole pack participates in raising pups once born — bringing food to the den, babysitting, and defending the den site — a cooperative structure that has no equivalent in domestic dog breeding. Pups are born blind and helpless and remain denned for the first several weeks of life.
