The average beef cattle gestation period is 283 days — about 9 months and 10 days — with a normal range of 279 to 292 days. British breeds (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn) cluster toward the shorter end; Continental breeds (Limousin, Charolais, Simmental) run a bit longer at 289 days; and Bos indicus breeds (Brahman) run longest, averaging 292 days.

Beef cattle pregnancy divides into three broad phases. The first trimester (days 1–90) covers embryo implantation and organ development — the period of highest embryo loss risk. The second trimester (days 91–180) is typically the most stable phase, when pregnancy testing is usually performed. The final trimester (days 181–283) sees the fastest fetal weight gain — the calf gains roughly two-thirds of its birth weight in this window, making late-gestation nutrition the single biggest lever a producer has over calf birth weight and vigor.

First-calf heifers warrant closer monitoring than mature cows — they account for a disproportionate share of dystocia cases, partly because their pelvic and body size hasn't fully matured and partly because calves sired by Continental bulls with high birth-weight EPDs can be large relative to a heifer's frame.

Body Condition Scoring During Pregnancy

Body condition score (BCS), rated on a 1–9 scale in most U.S. beef operations, is one of the most reliable predictors of calving ease, calf vigor, and the cow's ability to rebreed on schedule. The target BCS for beef cows entering the final trimester is 5 to 6 — thin cows (BCS below 4) are more prone to weak calves and delayed rebreeding, while overly fat cows (BCS above 7) carry higher dystocia risk from excess internal fat around the birth canal.

  • First trimester: maintain existing condition; this is not the phase to correct significant under- or over-conditioning.
  • Second trimester: the most forgiving window to adjust BCS gradually if a cow entered pregnancy too thin or too heavy.
  • Final trimester: nutritional demand rises sharply as the calf gains most of its birth weight — this is when underfeeding does the most damage to calf birth weight and colostrum quality.

Why Colostrum Matters for Beef Calves

Cattle have a placenta type that blocks maternal antibodies from crossing to the calf before birth — unlike in humans, a newborn calf gets essentially zero immune protection from the womb. Colostrum, the antibody-rich first milk, is the calf's only source of passive immunity, and the window to absorb those antibodies closes quickly as the gut lining changes in the first day of life.

Follow the 1-2-3 rule: the calf should stand within 1 hour of birth, nurse within 2 hours, and take in at least 3 quarts of colostrum within the first 3 hours. Calves that miss these benchmarks — whether from a difficult birth, a slow-to-mother cow, or a weak calf — need intervention: milk the cow and bottle- or tube-feed colostrum, or use a commercial colostrum replacer if the dam's own colostrum isn't available.

Signs Calving Is Approaching

2–4 weeks out: the udder begins filling and “bagging up.” This is the earliest reliable visual cue that calving is approaching, though the exact timing varies — first-calf heifers sometimes bag up earlier than mature cows.

24–48 hours out: the pelvic ligaments on either side of the tailhead relax and soften, giving a visibly “sunken” appearance. The vulva swells and reddens, and a clear to slightly cloudy mucous discharge often appears.

Final hours: the cow becomes restless, separates from the herd, and repeatedly lies down and stands. Teat ends may show “waxing” — small beads of colostrum. Once active labor (visible straining) begins, a calf should generally arrive within 30 minutes to 2 hours; prolonged labor without progress warrants a call to your veterinarian.
