Goat Breeding Guide: Heat, Mating, Pregnancy to Kidding

The whole goat breeding cycle in order, with the tools for each stage: heat detection, breeding, the 150 days of pregnancy, kidding, and weaning.

Quick Answer

Does cycle every 18 to 24 days (mainly August to January), stay in heat 12 to 48 hours, and carry kids for 150 days (range 145 to 155). Breed October to December for spring kidding. Enter a breeding date in the goat gestation calculator for exact dates and milestones.

1. Heat Cycle: Knowing When She Is Ready

Does cycle every 18 to 24 days, most reliably from August through January. A doe in heat flags her tail, is louder than usual, mounts or is mounted by herd mates, and has a swollen, pinkish vulva. Heat lasts 12 to 48 hours, and ovulation happens near the end. Miss the window and you wait three weeks.

2. Breeding: Natural Cover or AI

A mature buck can cover 20 to 30 does in a season if turned out, or a few does a week in hand-mating. Breed does only at healthy body condition and, for first-timers, at about 70 percent of adult weight, typically 7 to 10 months old. For AI or planned sires, note the exact breeding date: every date on this page depends on it.

3. Pregnancy: The 150 Days

Gestation averages 150 days with a normal range of 145 to 155. Early pregnancy shows almost nothing; confirmation comes by ultrasound at 30 to 45 days or blood PAG test around 30 days. Feed stays at maintenance until the final six weeks, when grain is introduced slowly, especially for does carrying twins or triplets.

4. Kidding Prep: The Last Two Weeks

From about day 135, does go to a clean pen and the kit comes out: iodine for navels, towels, thermometer, lubricant, and colostrum replacer. The udder tightens, ligaments around the tailhead soften, and the doe may go quiet and paw at her bedding. Have the vet number written down before day 140, not during labor.

5. Kidding: Labor and When to Help

Labor runs one to two hours for a first freshener, faster after that. Kids present front feet first with the nose on top of them. Intervene, with clean gloves and lubricant, after 30 minutes of strong straining with no progress or when more than an hour passes between kids with the doe still restless. Kids need to be dried, navel-dipped, and nursing within the first hour.

6. Kid Care and Weaning

Kids need colostrum in the first hours, then gain roughly a quarter pound a day. Disbud, castrate, and tattoo in the first two weeks per your vet's advice. Wean at 8 to 10 weeks if kids are eating creep feed well and have doubled birth weight. The doe rebreeds weeks later only if you let her: many breeders give a full-year rest between kiddings.

Goat Breeding Month Chart

Breed month on the left, kidding month on the right, using the 150 day average. For year-round breeds like Boers any row works; for seasonal dairy breeds the fall rows are the realistic ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What month should I breed my goats?

Breed so kids arrive when you have grass and mild weather: October to December breeding gives March to May kidding in most of North America. Spring kids gain fastest on pasture. Avoid deep-winter kidding unless you have heated housing; January kids in cold climates need a heat lamp and constant watching.

At what age can a doe goat get pregnant?

Does reach puberty around 4 to 6 months but should not be bred until 7 to 10 months and about 70 percent of mature body weight. Breeding underconditioned doeling kids stunts growth and risks kidding problems. A healthy adult doe can kid yearly for many years.

How many does per buck for breeding?

A mature buck in good condition handles 20 to 30 does in a 6 to 8 week breeding season with hand-mating or pasture exposure. Young bucks get 10 does. For larger herds, split does into groups or use AI to avoid overworking a single sire.

Can goats breed year round?

It depends on the breed. Dairy goats of Alpine origin are strongly seasonal and cycle best in fall. Boers, Kikos, and Nubians can breed most of the year in temperate climates, and near the equator goats cycle continuously. That is why the month chart below has all twelve rows.

How long after kidding can a goat be rebred?

Does return to heat weeks after kidding, but rebreeding right away means back to back pregnancies with no recovery. Most farms rebreed 8 to 12 weeks after kidding at the earliest, and many give does every second year off. Condition score decides: a thin doe gets a pass.
