Goat Breeding Season
Most goat breeds are seasonal, short-day breeders — the natural breeding season in the Northern Hemisphere runs approximately August through January, resulting in kidding from January through June. Nigerian Dwarf goats are the major exception, capable of cycling nearly year-round rather than being confined to a strict fall season, though peak fertility for the breed still runs October through February.
Buck-to-Doe Ratios
A mature, fertile buck can typically breed 25 to 40 does during a controlled breeding season. Young bucks under a year old should be limited to 10–15 does, and giving bucks a rest between breedings during heavy use periods helps maintain semen quality.
Signs a Doe Is in Heat
Signs of estrus include tail wagging (“flagging”), increased vocalization, mounting behavior, a swollen or reddened vulva, mucous discharge, and a slight drop in appetite. Individual heat periods last approximately 12–36 hours and recur roughly every 18–24 days if the doe isn't bred.
