Horse Foaling Calculator

This horse foaling calculator predicts your mare's expected foaling date instantly. Enter the breeding date to calculate the foaling window, and use the checklists below to prepare a foaling kit and recognize the signs that foaling is close.

Quick Answer

Mares foal approximately 340 days after breeding — about 11.2 months — with a wide normal range of 320–370 days. Enter your mare's breeding date above to calculate the predicted foaling date.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the breeding date and select your mare's breed for a slightly more precise estimate — draft breeds run a bit longer, miniature horses a bit shorter. Click Calculate Due Date to see the predicted foaling date and full milestone timeline.

Because horse gestation has one of the widest normal ranges of any domestic animal — a full six-week spread — treat the calculated date as the center of a foaling watch window, not a fixed appointment. Begin close monitoring around day 320.

Foaling Kit Checklist

  • Clean towels for drying the foal
  • Iodine for the navel
  • Tail wrap for the mare during delivery
  • Foal enema to help pass the first meconium
  • Vitamin E and selenium supplements
  • Milk of magnesia (for the mare, only on veterinary advice)
  • Flashlight — most mares foal at night

Signs of Foaling

  • Waxing: small beads of colostrum appear on the teats, typically 24–48 hours before foaling.
  • Milk running from the udder 4–6 hours before delivery.
  • Sweating, pawing, and repeatedly looking at the flanks.
  • General restlessness and frequent lying down and standing.

Roughly 70% of mares foal at night, between dusk and dawn — an evolutionary adaptation that likely reduces predation risk. Many breeders use a foaling camera or alarm system for this reason rather than relying on daytime observation alone.

Stages of Foaling

  • Stage 1 (30–60 minutes): cervical dilation — restlessness, sweating, and mild discomfort.
  • Stage 2 (20–30 minutes): active delivery — this should be fast once the water breaks; a delivery taking much longer needs immediate veterinary attention.
  • Stage 3 (within 3 hours): passage of the placenta — a retained placenta beyond 3 hours is a veterinary emergency that can quickly progress to toxemia and laminitis.

A healthy foal should stand within 1 hour and nurse within 2 hours of birth — delayed standing or nursing needs veterinary assessment.

How We Calculate Horse Foaling

The horse foaling calculator uses the formula: Foaling Date = Breeding Date + 340 days. This average and the 320–370 day range are derived from equine veterinary research and validated by university extension programs.
