Angelfish are substrate spawners — rather than scattering eggs freely like goldfish or koi, a bonded pair selects and meticulously cleans a flat vertical or near-vertical surface, such as a broad aquarium plant leaf, a piece of slate, or a length of PVC pipe, and deposits neat rows of eggs directly onto it.
Angelfish form monogamous pair bonds that can last for years, and an established, compatible pair will typically spawn repeatedly every couple of weeks once conditions are right. Pairing can take time to form naturally — juvenile angelfish are often raised in a group of six or more specifically so they can select their own compatible partner as they mature.
Egg Guarding Behavior
Both parents take an active role in egg care — fanning the eggs continuously with their fins to keep oxygenated water flowing over the clutch and prevent fungal buildup, and picking out and removing any unfertilized or fungused eggs to protect the healthy ones nearby.
First-Time Parent Failure Is Normal
It's extremely common — and considered a normal part of the process, not a permanent problem — for a first-time angelfish pair to eat one or several of their earliest spawns. Inexperienced parents often haven't yet developed proper egg-care instincts, and successful parenting typically improves markedly by the second, third, or fourth spawn as the pair matures together.

The Wriggler Stage & Free Swimming
After hatching, angelfish fry remain attached to the spawning substrate by a sticky thread for several days — flexing and "wriggling" but not yet capable of independent swimming. Parents often move wrigglers to a new spot periodically as part of their guarding behavior. This stage transitions to free-swimming around day 5–7 post-hatch, once the yolk sac is mostly absorbed.
Once free-swimming, offer microworms or newly hatched baby brine shrimp as first foods, followed by finely crushed flakes as fry grow. Water quality should stay pristine during this window — fry are highly sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes.
Parent-Raised vs. Separated Fry
Both approaches work: parent-raised fry benefit from natural protection and parental fanning behavior, while separated fry (moved to a dedicated rearing tank once free-swimming) avoid the risk of a spawn being eaten and can be fed more precisely without competing for parental attention. Many breeders separate fry once free-swimming, particularly with pairs still learning good parenting instincts.
Water quality for breeding should stay soft and slightly acidic, pH 6.5–7.0, reflecting the species' South American Amazon basin origins.
