Live Bearer vs. Egg Layer: The Core Difference
Live-bearing fish — guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, and Endlers among them — are ovoviviparous: the female retains fertilized eggs internally, nourishes the developing embryos, and gives birth to free-swimming fry that need no external incubation. This makes them some of the easiest fish to breed, since there's no egg stage to protect from fungus, predation, or improper water flow.
Egg-laying fish — bettas, goldfish, angelfish, discus, and koi — release and fertilize eggs externally, and those eggs then develop outside the mother's body before hatching. Parental care varies enormously across egg-layers: bettas and discus provide extensive, hands-on parental care (a bubble nest and slime-coat feeding, respectively), while goldfish and koi provide none at all and will actively eat their own eggs if not separated.
Dwarf shrimp fall into a middle category — technically egg-layers, but the female carries fertilized eggs externally under her tail (the "berried" period) rather than depositing them on a surface, offering a degree of protection similar to live-bearing without true internal gestation. Tilapia take yet another approach, holding eggs inside the mother's mouth for the full incubation period — full protection without true internal development.

An incubation period (or hatching period) refers to external development — the time fertilized eggs spend developing outside the body, whether in a bubble nest, on a substrate, scattered in open water, or externally attached to a parent, before hatching into free-swimming young.
Mouthbrooding species like tilapia occupy a genuine middle ground: the eggs develop outside the mother's reproductive tract (technically an incubation process) but inside a fully enclosed, protected space (her mouth) that functions much like internal gestation in terms of protection from the environment. Shrimp are similarly a hybrid case — eggs develop externally but remain physically attached to the mother throughout, unlike scattered or nest-laid eggs left entirely on their own.
