What "Berried" Means
A berried female is one carrying a visible cluster of eggs tucked under her abdomen, held in place by her swimmerets (small paddle-like limbs). The term comes from the eggs' resemblance to a cluster of berries, and it's the standard word breeders use instead of "pregnant" for shrimp. A berried female constantly fans her swimmerets to keep oxygenated water flowing over the eggs — a behavior you can watch happening continuously once you know to look for it.

Why Amano Shrimp Are Hard to Breed
Amano shrimp larvae hatch as free-swimming, plankton-like stages that require brackish (part-saltwater) conditions to survive and develop — a full marine or freshwater tank won't work for this stage. Successfully raising Amano shrimp larvae to the juvenile stage requires a dedicated brackish rearing setup that most home aquarists don't maintain, which is a key reason most Amano shrimp sold in stores are wild-caught rather than tank-bred, despite the species being extremely popular for algae control.

Moulting Risks During Pregnancy
A berried female can lose her entire clutch if she molts while carrying eggs, since the eggs are attached to the exoskeleton she's shedding — this is one of the more common causes of an unexpectedly failed berried period. Stable, low-stress water conditions and consistent parameters help minimize unnecessary molting during pregnancy, since molting is often triggered by stress or sudden water changes.
Shrimplet Care & Water Quality
Shrimplets need no special food — they graze on biofilm, the natural layer of microorganisms and algae that coats surfaces in an established, mature aquarium. This is part of why a tank with some age and established biofilm on hardscape and plants supports shrimplet survival far better than a brand-new setup.
Water quality is crucial throughout — shrimp are notably sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and copper, tolerating far less than most fish. Copper in particular is highly toxic to shrimp and other invertebrates even in trace amounts completely harmless to fish, so shrimp keepers need to check fertilizer and medication labels carefully and use copper-free products.
Community Tank Considerations
Even peaceful community fish can pick off newly released shrimplets, which are tiny and defenseless in their first days of life. A species-only shrimp tank, or one with only very small, non-predatory tankmates and dense plant cover, gives shrimplets the best odds of surviving to adulthood.
